Snapper
Starter fish. Bait: Earthworm. Found at: under the betsy and sons trading post pier. First contract (5). Grind into Fish Meat. Easiest catch; a good fish to learn the controls on.
Softgrazer
Peaceful fish. Bait: Wind-Up Tin. Found at: the peaceful-fish spot marked by the quest. Contract (3). Process in the Thresher for Chromatic Scales. More Stamina than a Snapper and recovers while you reel.
Harpooner
Predatory fish. Bait: Rainbow Fin. Found at: the predatory-fish spot (look for the splash zone). Contract (3) to unlock the Carburetor. Chases a moving lure: reel steadily, not too fast, not too slow.
Peaceful vs predatory fish
The developer splits fish into peaceful and predatory. Peaceful fish bite bait that sits in the water, so you cast and keep still. Predatory fish only strike a lure that moves: you reel it through the splash zone and let them chase it. Rarer, more dangerous fish test your gear and timing, and some only appear under specific conditions or at certain times of day or night.
What to do with your catch
- Hand in contract fish whole; don't grind or sell them first.
- Grind spare fish into Fish Meat at the Grinder: it's a bait ingredient and feeds the Fuel Larva that makes boat fuel.
- Process Softgrazers in the Thresher for Chromatic Scales.
- Sell to the traders. The developer says more dangerous fish fetch higher prices.
- Watch the hold: fish in your hold can eat each other, so sort your catch.
