How to Fish in DREADMOOR
Getting your first rod
- Reach the Betsy and Sons trading post (sail west from the starting house).
- Do the Bunkhouse tasks and sleep through your first night.
- Pick up the Simple Rod in the Bunkhouse.
- Meet the traders at the fishing platform behind the Dry Dock. The first spot is under the trading post pier.
The Simple Rod is enough for every catch the demo asks of you. If fish keep escaping, the problem is usually bait or technique, not the rod.
Step by step
- Choose tackle. Interact with a fishing spot to pick your rod and bait.
- Cast and keep still. Moving the rod before a bite can scare fish off.
- Drain Stamina. When a fish is hooked, pull the rod the opposite way to its movement: fish goes left, pull right; it turns, you turn.
- Reel when it tires. Zero Stamina doesn't land the fish by itself; you still have to bring it in, and it can recover and fight again.
- Watch Line Tension. If the meter climbs toward the limit, stop reeling until it drops. Losing a little distance beats losing the fish.
- Land and keep it. Use the Land Fish action, then make sure you keep the fish. Releasing it by mistake means it won't count for contracts.

Fish Meat for crafted lures comes from processing fish at the Grinder. Don't grind or sell fish you still need for a contract.
Mouse or keyboard?
During the first fishing sequence you choose mouse or keyboard control for the rod, and you can switch later in the settings. If a fish changes direction faster than you can sweep the mouse, try the keyboard scheme.
Fishing problems players report
- Reeling forever without landing the fish. One player found that holding the reel didn't work for them; tapping the left mouse button while steering with A and D until the F prompt appeared, then holding F, did. This looks like a demo bug, so your experience may differ.
- Fish won't bite. Check you're using the right bait for that fish (see the table above) and that you aren't moving the rod while waiting.

Fishing is meant to feel tense rather than relaxing. Even ordinary fish resist, rarer and more dangerous ones test your gear and timing, and some species only appear under specific conditions or at certain times of day or night.
